  • SITA – H.S. Council, Regional Manager

Our company has worked with and used the services provided by Recycling Lives ( formerly Preston Recycling) since 1998. I have been the Manager of the Household Waste Recycling Centres in Lancashire since 2001 and we have 23 locations throughout the County.

During this time Recycling Lives have provided us with services for the collection and recycling of scrap metal, Lead Acid Batteries, refrigerators, WEEE products including Televisions, Large Domestic Appliances and on occasions they have supplemented our transport operations with vehicles and drivers often at very short notice. The service they have provided has been on a 7 day, 362 days a year when required and to meet the demands of the servicing of the recycling centres. During the recent changeover to Digital television the company were servicing some of our busier sites twice per day as the increase in demand in the receipt of the used televisions was in the region of 100 % over several months, increasing from some 12,000 to 24,000 units.

The company has been at the forefront of the introduction of new legislation particularly when the CFC gases began to be removed from refrigerators and it was necessary to treat them in controlled environment and the introduction of the WEEE regulations. I have found them on all occasions to be helpful and competitively priced and regular contact is maintained to discuss any issues that may arise for either party and to discuss the changes in prices of materials.

I trust that this information is sufficient for any enquiries you are making with regard to the services Recycling Lives provide, but if you wish to contact me, I would be happy to help in any way I can.

  • Zoe Vickerman – Alliance and Awards Manager, Centre for Social Justice

Through my role at the CSJ, I frequently visit charities and social enterprises, identifying models of excellence to highlight to government and to those who shape national and local policy. I have rarely come across a model as interesting and effective as that which is being pioneered by Recycling Lives.

  • National Training Awards 2011 judges

"Your training was considered to be exemplary by our team of regional and UK judges, they were particularly impressed with the contribution this programme is making along with the strong elements of training 'best practice' being shown, and the further development potential being demonstrated in the future."

  • Hayley Peet – employer advisor at Job Centre Plus

"It was a pleasure to attend the National Training Awards ceremony at Recycling Lives’ Preston headquarters. I have been working with Recycling Lives (particularly operations director, Alasdair Jackson and training co-ordinator, Sidonie Richardson) since the launch of Future Jobs Fund in September 2009. Together, we have created employment opportunities for over 200 local people.

My colleagues at Jobcentre Plus and I are incredibly proud to be working with Recycling Lives to improve the lives of others. It is a truly inspirational organisation and its success in winning the National Training Award in the North West Medium Employer category was thoroughly deserved."

  • Peter Cresswell – chair of the North West National Training Award judging panel

"I’ve been a National Training Award Judge for many years and occasionally you receive an entry that really stands out - Recycling Lives’ submission was one of those. The judging panel unanimously agreed the strength of the business model underpinned by the systematic approach to training made this entry an exemplar that other businesses would benefit from adopting.

It was a real delight to attend the award ceremony and meet the people involved with Recycling Lives. I spoke to a number of individuals that had participated in the training programme and it was clear that it had impacted positively on their lives, with many keen to continue building on the skills that they had developed through the different courses.

Recycling Lives clearly demonstrates how business-led altruism really does benefit all of the stakeholders."

  • Duncan Carnie – policy manager at the Department of Work and Pensions, European Social Fund Division

"The national European Social Fund (ESF) Leader Award Assessment Panel was very impressed by Recycling Lives’ work in the Achieve North West project. The panel thought it was a great example of an ESF-funded project making use of environmental skills to help homeless people and unemployed ex-offenders get back to work. The project has a positive impact on the environment by diverting waste away from landfill whilst helping ex-offenders get back to or closer to the labour market. It is a ‘win – win’ for unemployed people and the environment alike."

  • Tracey Whittle – ESF NOMS Achieve North West case manager

"I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the National Training Award Ceremony.  The venue was excellent and the food was outstanding.  We were given plenty of time to network, which is particularly useful at these types of events.

I am always astounded by the level of enthusiasm from all staff at Recycling Lives and find there continues to be something innovative happening within this ever-expanding company.

For Recycling Lives to be nominated for the National Training Award was excellent, but then to go on and win it was exceptional. The quote that stayed in my mind from the ceremony was made by National Training Award Judge, Nirmal Singh, who said:

'When the Recycling Lives application arrived on my desk I thought the organisation was too good to be true - until I visited Recycling Lives and found that there were real jobs, real training, real enthusiastic staff and real people getting the opportunities to progress towards a new path in life.'

I congratulate Recycling Lives for their dedication, insight, enthusiasm and passion to create a safe environment for individuals to develop new pathways in life skills, training and employment which has undoubtedly changed people’s lives."

  • Adam Morgan – director at MorganAnderson

"It was an honour to celebrate with Recycling Lives at their National Training Award ceremony on 28th September, 2011. Having won a National Training Award the previous year, I understand just how much hard work and effort has gone into creating such a valuable development project that is dramatically changing the lives of many individuals. As Recycling Lives continues to prosper through the economic downturn, I’d like to personally congratulate the entire team for their hard work, drive and sustained passion for their people. A massive well done."
