Helping the Community

Many of our Residents have been alienated by their community and, in some cases, even by their own families. It is not uncommon to discover that the first real community they have experienced is their friends and colleagues at the Recycling Lives Centre.

And yet despite this, it is rare to come across any established Resident that is unwilling to support other Residents who are new to Recycling Lives or are less fortunate than themselves. It is a fact that every Recycling Lives community will always consist of new and established Residents, and true to our ‘stick man’ logo, the Residents that have progressed never forget that it was once them on their knees.

To encourage this personal development and self-esteem, Residents are constantly presented with opportunities to sustain the Charity and benefit the local communities around each Centre, such as the innovative Skip 2 It events. We are happy to work in assisting other charities and organisations involved with social welfare and we welcome and encourage the most basic of human principles such as kindness, consideration and honesty.

Helping One Another

One example of our Residents desire to contribute was demonstrated by their involvement in our partnership with Galloway’s Society for the Blind.

In November 2009, Residents accompanied a group of partially sighted and blind people on an intrepid hike up Mount Snowden.

This resulted in life changing experiences for all the Recycling Lives Residents that took part. The adventurous spirit and daring of the blind people humbled our Residents, all of whom had experienced homelessness and isolation.

One Resident said: “…my problems don’t seem as bad anymore after walking up a mountain with a laughing blind man. I seemed more worried than him!”

Different experiences can be both helpful and rewarding to everyone participating. If you like the sound of our community ethos and want to engage with Recycling Lives on any community activity, please contact us.
