Lord Shuttleworth was first introduced to Recycling Lives in September 2010 when the company won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. Recycling Lives was one of only ten organisations in the UK to win the award last year and held a champagne reception to mark the occasion, at which Lord-Lieutenant Shuttleworth – HM The Queen’s representative in the North West – was the guest of honour.

Presenting Recycling Lives’ founder Steve Jackson with the award, Lord-Lieutenant Shuttleworth commented:

“You don’t need me to tell you that Recycling Lives is a good news story. These awards are not easily won. In 2010, no fewer than 190 companies were considered for the Sustainable Development section. Ten were successful and one of those was Recycling Lives.

“What an inspiring story this is for all in Lancashire and the North West – Recycling Lives has demonstrated something truly remarkable in social, environmental and commercial sustainability. It is now up to the rest of us to give as much support as possible to the company in the future.”

As testament to his belief in Recycling Lives, Lord Shuttleworth accepted an offer by the company’s Board of Trustees to become patron of the Recycling Lives charity in January 2011.

Kevin Williams, acting Chief Executive of the Recycling Lives charity commented on Lord Shuttleworth’s appointment, saying:

“We’re proud to have the Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire, Lord Shuttleworth, on board as patron of our charity. Lord Shuttleworth is a well-known figure in the North West, with a long established reputation for assisting some of the most vulnerable people in the region through his charitable activities.

“We’re looking forward to working with him to attract support and collaboration for our own projects over the coming year. Our aim for 2011 is to develop more successful social enterprise schemes at the hearts of struggling communities, and Lord Shuttleworth is exactly the right person to help us build on the success we have enjoyed to date, in readiness for further expansion.”
