Dave Gallagher, Helmrig Ltd
Helmrig welcomed four of our participants into its team through 2024, in training placements or full-time employment as landscapers.
The business, based in Lancashire, specialises in landscaping, tree works and invasive weed management, working for clients across the construction sector. Having grown by 60% in recent years, its bosses were looking to grow their team and turned to our employment team for support: “When I was on the lookout for good people, it was natural for me to reach out to RL,” says Managing Director, David Gallagher.
He was already familiar with the Charity’s work, having previously been Head of HSE for the former Recycling Lives Ltd business: “I’d seen first-hand the power of the RL model and worked alongside lots of great people who had been supported by the Charity to find that right opportunity to build a better life.”
Given the often-challenging conditions of landscaping – “our work is outdoors and physically demanding” – David was keen to develop a pipeline of talent that was sustainable for all involved.
The trusted relationship our Key Workers build with participants is central to this, he says, allowing them to recommend people whose experience, work ethic and ambition are suited to the business. In turn, Helmrig offer ongoing support for participants to overcome any obstacles that might come up.
“We recognise that leaving prison and transitioning into independent living is a big challenge,” David explains. “The Charity plays a really important role in supporting both the individual and us, as the employer, to understand and overcome any barriers to working.”
Of the four men who’ve joined Helmrig so far, two have already been promoted. And they have been warmly welcomed by the rest of the team, David adds: “Any concerns about working alongside an ‘ex-offender’ quickly ceased to be an issue once the first man arrived, got to know people, and put some hard graft in.”
The partnership now offers logistical, reputational and social benefits for Helmrig: “I hope that working with Recycling Lives Charity says good things about us. But it’s pragmatic, too.
“Our work is labour intensive, and I need boots on the ground. At the same time, we’re a people business and we look after our people. So, it’s a win-win – the individual finds an opportunity well suited to them, and Helmrig finds people with the potential to become a loyal, committed tradesperson.”
