Mencap

“Like many charities we’re always looking to cut costs so the food was something we were very keen to be part of but it’s provided help to us more than we ever thought it would.
“As well as helping cut costs when it comes to food shopping, it also helps us to teach some of our service users cooking and food preparation skills.
“We provide support and services for 500 adults and children with learning disabilities, right across Cumbria.
“Some of our members have very complex needs so the centres give families a breather or help adults to prepare for independence.
“We might have a cooking session to make a shepherd’s pie, for example, showing our members how to peel and cut vegetables, how to carefully prepare food, then have a think about what else to cook to go with that meal. It gives them a real sense of satisfaction and pride to have cooked their own meal and for others too.
“It’s about socialising too, eating with others, helping with their social and communication skills. It’s been a big hit.”
